Skin Cancer Treatment
Skin cancer treatment is highly individualised, taking into account the type of cancer, its location, behaviour, and stage. Early or superficial lesions may be managed with simple surgical excision, cryotherapy, topical therapies, or photodynamic therapy.
More complex or high-risk cancers – particularly those on the face or in cosmetically or functionally important areas – often require more advanced approaches. Mohs Micrographic Surgery is internationally regarded as the gold standard for these cases, offering the highest cure rate while preserving as much healthy, normal tissue as possible.
A Centre of Excellence for Skin Cancer Care
The Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute was established in March 2020 by Dr Johann de Wet as a dedicated centre of excellence and referral centre for skin cancer patients across Cape Town and the greater Western Cape – particularly Stellenbosch and Somerset West.
Our service is supported by a multi-professional team of dermatologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, head-and-neck surgeons, cancer surgeons, and oncologists – allowing coordinated, comprehensive and evidence-based care for patients.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery in the Western Cape
Although Mohs Micrographic Surgery has long been recommended by international guidelines as the gold standard for treating high-risk skin cancers, access in South Africa has historically been limited. With the establishment of the Mohs Surgery service in Somerset West, this world-class treatment is now available to patients in the bigger Cape Town area.
Patients who typically benefit from Mohs surgery include those with:
• Larger or longstanding skin cancers
• Aggressive or infiltrative tumour subtypes
• Skin cancers recurring after previous treatment
• Incompletely excised cancers
• Tumours located in cosmetic or functionally important areas (for example head and neck cancers)
Mohs surgery and any required reconstruction are performed on the same day in a day-hospital setting and are covered by most medical aids. Dr Johann de Wet offers Mohs surgery to suitable candidates at the Summerhill Surgical Centre in Somerset West as part of the Skinmatters Mohs and Reconstructive Unit.
