Your skin is your body’s single largest organ. It’s a big deal because it can be a window to the state of your general health.

“Caring for your skin from a young age will be the single biggest favour you can do your future self,” says Dr Johann de Wet, dermatologist at The Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute in Stellenbosch. He says advancements in medical science has lead to an increase in life expectancy. We therefore need to protect and care for our skin so it will last us a lifetime.

Dr De Wet explains the skin has many roles in the maintenance of life and your health, but it can also be the cause of many potential problems; to be exact – more than 3 000 possible skin disorders.

“Not only does the skin hold your insides in, but it also plays a crucial role in providing a barrier between the outside world and the highly regulated systems within the body. Your skin is required to be airtight, watertight and flexible all at the same time. Further roles include helping with temperature regulation, providing immune defence, stimulating vitamin production, protecting us from cancer-causing UV radiation and providing sensation,” he says.

Trained and experienced to be your skin’s best friend

Dr De Wet explains why a dermatologist is the best placed medical professional to help you maintain healthy skin.

“Dermatologists are expert medical practitioners and surgeons with extensive training (at least twelve years) to diagnose and treat all diseases of the skin, hair and nails as well as cosmetic problems. They are the only medical professionals who study the skin on an anatomic, histological, physiological and molecular basis.”
