Dr. De Wet recently attended the European Association of Dermato-Oncology (EADO) Annual Congress in Athens, Greece.

This year, the congress was held in conjunction with the World Melanoma Congress—an internationally renowned event that brought together leading dermatologists, surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, and researchers to share the latest advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

A key focus of the congress was the critical importance of complete margin control surgery for managing high-risk skin cancers. Central to Mohs micrographic surgery, this approach allows for the meticulous removal of cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. It plays a vital role in reducing recurrence rates and ensuring optimal functional and cosmetic outcomes, particularly in anatomically sensitive or high-risk areas.

Notably, new data presented during the plenary sessions demonstrated improved overall survival rates for patients with high-risk squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) treated with complete margin control surgery. This evidence has reinforced its adoption as the standard of care in both the United States and Europe.

Dr. De Wet was proud to see that the care being offered to patients at the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute is fully aligned with these international standards. From precision surgical techniques to cutting-edge diagnostic tools and evidence-based treatment protocols, South African patients are receiving care on par with that in leading global centres.

As a dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, Dr. De Wet remains committed to staying at the forefront of global developments in skin cancer care—ensuring that patients continue to benefit from the highest level of treatment available.
